Close protection

Close protection or escort protection? The difference explained simply

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean the same thing. This article explains how close protection and escort protection differ, when each one is the right choice and what role a security driver plays.

Two terms, one common core

Both services protect people, not buildings or premises. Both start with the question of where, when and from whom someone needs protecting. The difference lies in the time frame and the scope of the planning.

Escort protection relates to a clearly defined occasion. Close protection in the strict sense stays with a person over days or weeks and also takes their daily routine, home environment and travel into account.

The differences at a glance

Put simply, the difference comes down to four points:

  • Time frame: escort protection covers one appointment or one day; close protection covers a longer period.
  • Planning: escort protection plans how the specific occasion will run; close protection develops a protection plan based on a risk analysis.
  • Scope: escort protection focuses on routes, arrival and departure; close protection also takes in daily life, family and the home environment.
  • Staffing: escort protection often needs only one officer; close protection may need several close protection officers, depending on the situation.

When escort protection is enough

Escort protection is the right fit when the risk is tied to a specific moment and subsides afterwards.

  • A court hearing or an appointment with a public authority, with the other side in the same building
  • A negotiation, a dismissal meeting or an annual general meeting
  • An arrival at the airport with a transfer to the hotel
  • A public appearance or an evening event

When close protection makes sense

Close protection over a longer period makes sense when a threat persists or cannot be narrowed down to individual appointments.

  • After specific threats or an incident
  • In cases of ongoing harassment or stalking
  • When public attention rises and stays high
  • On longer trips to unfamiliar places

The role of the security driver

Many critical moments happen between two appointments: getting in and out of the car, in traffic, at the hotel entrance. A security driver helps plan routes, stops and drop-off points, and coordinates arrival and departure with the protection team.

That is why escort protection is often combined with a VIP chauffeur service, as is close protection for appointments involving a lot of driving.

How the decision is made

Which form is right depends on the situation, not on the label. In the initial consultation, Marc Derlich clarifies what has happened, what is coming up and where the risk really lies. Often an assignment starts with escort protection for a single appointment and is extended if needed. Sometimes a security consultation is all it takes.
